New Requirements effective for Spring 2005 (available for all English
majors)
Option G: Professional and Technical Writing (Total = 36 credits)

  • 3 credits in English 215 (Introduction to English Studies)
  • 3 credits in Shakespeare selected from English 452 (Shakespeare) or 530 (Studies in Shakespeare)
  • 3 credits in English 439 (Document Design)
  • 18 credits total selected from any of the following options:
    • 3 credits selected from English 205, 206, 207, or 214
    • English 431 (Topics in Advanced Writing, can take different topics up to 9 credits)
    • English 433 (Creative Nonfiction)
    • English 434 (Editing and Publishing)
    • English 435 (Professional and Technical Writing)
    • English 436 (Writing for Information Technology)
    • English 437 (Project Management for Professional Writers)
    • English 448 (Professional Writing Theory and Practice)
  • 3 credits in an upper level English elective
  • 3 credits in a 600-level English seminar
  • 3 credits in a capstone experience: English 449 (Writing Internship in English)

Note: If you started Option G under the old requirements (shown below) and
wish to switch to the new requirements, any courses marked with *
below which you have completed under the old plan can be substituted for
a corresponding course in the
new requirements category of “18 credits total selected from any of the
following options” listed above.

L&S Advisor.

  • 3 credits in English 448
  • 3 credits in rhetorical or communication theory selected from English 432*, Communication 436*, or Communication 510*
  • 3 credits in language or linguistics selected from English 400*, 401*, 403*, or 404* [language studies courses]
  • 6 credits; select either option a or b
    • Technical Writing Emphasis – English 435 and 436
    • Professional Writing Emphasis – English 434 and either English 433 or JMC 306* (Feature and Magazine Article Writing)*
  • 3 credits in Shakespeare selected from English 452 or 530
  • 3 credits in literary surveys selected from English 300-309
  • 3 credits in an upper-level English elective
  • 3 credits in JMC 231* (Publication Design) or English 439 (Document Design)
  • 3 credits in English 437 (Project Management)
  • 3 credits in a capstone experience: English 449 (Writing Internship in English)
