Math 231, Sec. 10 – Spring 2016

Syllabus: Here is the Class syllabus in PDF format, listing the class details, including grading policies, and my office hours for the term. This syllabus is also available on D2L.

Announcements:

Announcements about the course will be posted here, and emailed to the @uwm.edu email addresses of students registered for the course.

In-class worksheets:

Each class period a worksheet or set of problems will be distributed. These problems will be started in class, and are due the next class period (or you can hand it in before you leave). These assignments will not be posted online, you may only pick them up in class.

The problems we work in class are merely to get you started. To learn the material in the course you will need to work additional exercises from the text. Those are listed below.

Suggested Textbook Exercises: (from Stewart’s Essential Calculus, 2nd edition)

Though these exercises will not be turned in for a grade, if you do not work problems, you will not learn the material. A strong student who earned high grades in the prerequisite courses should plan to spend at least 8 HOURS outside of class EVERY WEEK studying and working problems in order to get a C or better in this course. You may need to spend additional time if you are less familiar with the prerequisite material.

It is essential to work as many exercises as possible from the homework. Each section contains problems that cover many different topics and range in level of difficulty. Be sure to work all of the different types of problems and be sure to work the more difficult problems or you will not be prepared for the exams. A student solution book is available that contains solutions to some problems. DO NOT LOOK at the solutions while you are working problems. You should use the solutions only to check your work after it is complete.

It’s a good idea to do more problems than I assigned, for practice. Pick problems similar to these to try.
