I teach and do research on cinema, television, video, video games, and new media. I am particularly interested in the cultural status of emerging media and the cultural history of new television and video technologies.

My books include The Media Studies Toolkit (Routledge, 2022); Atari Age: The Emergence of Video Games in America (MIT P, 2017); Indie: An American Film Culture (Columbia UP, 2011); Legitimating Television: Media Convergence and Cultural Status (Routledge, 2012, co-authored with Elana Levine); and Video Revolutions: On the History of a Medium (Columbia UP, 2014).

I am a Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the Department of English, the program in Media, Cinema, and Digital Studies (BA/MA/PhD) , and the program in Film Studies (BA).
