I teach and do research on cinema, television, video, video games, and new media. I am particularly interested in the cultural status of emerging media and the cultural history of new television and video technologies.

My books include Indie: An American Film Culture (Columbia UP, 2011); Legitimating Television: Media Convergence and Cultural Status (Routledge, 2012, co-authored with Elana Levine); and Video Revolutions: On the History of a Medium (Columbia UP, 2014).

In February 2017, my new book Atari Age: The Emergence of Video Games in America was published by The MIT Press.

I am Professor and Chair of the Department of Journalism, Advertising, and Media Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
