ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP APPOINTMENTS

Dean of the Graduate School, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (appointed by Provost Johannes Britz, January 2014 – August 2021, upon a national search).

Directly reports to the Provost and serves on the Academic Deans and Academic Leadership Councils. Collaborates with respective deans, associate deans, relevant faculty, and Center for International Education to promote graduate education for domestic and international students. Responsible for strategic planning and implementation for the Graduate School, including enrollment management. Acts as advocate and spokesperson for graduate students and programs, taking a leading role in planning for and review of new and existing graduate programs, including innovative non-traditional programs (e.g., integrated bachelor’s master’s, interdisciplinary, professional master’s and doctoral) or program delivery. Pursues opportunities to establish external advocacy and development and internal partner relationships with respective deans and relevant faculty. Works with school and college faculty and staff, with graduate school staff, and with campus administration to assist graduate students with their professional development, quality of life, and success. Serve as the Provost’s representative and designee as needed.

Associate Dean for Research, Office of Research, University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee (appointed by Interim Vice Provost for Research, Mark Harris, August 2013-December 2013, concurrent with Associate Dean for Graduate Education appointment with Interim Dean Yu).

Upon reorganization of Graduate School through creation of a separate Office of Research, starting with the Academic 2013/14 year, remain responsible for promoting research in areas supported in previous position and add responsibilities for research in several social sciences areas. Actively engaged in the design and implementation of the organizational transformation.

Associate Dean for Natural and Biomedical Sciences & Engineering, Graduate School, University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee (appointed by Vice Chancellor for Research and Dean of Graduate School, Colin Scanes, upon campus-level search, January 2011-August 2011; reappointed by Interim Dean of Graduate School, David Yu, August 2011-December 2013).

Directly responsible for promoting research and graduate education in six schools/colleges: Natural Sciences Departments in College of Letters and Sciences, College of Nursing, College of Health Science, School of Public Health, School of Freshwater Science, and College of Engineering and Applied Science. Key liaison role with the faculty and leadership of these schools, colleges and departments. Leading role in planning for and conducting reviews of new and existing graduate programs, including innovative non-traditional programs or program delivery. Provide oversight for program changes, curricular issues, and for academic appeals. Advocate for interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary initiatives in education and research, including facilitation of international opportunities. Develop expertise in extramural funding sources and advocate for UWM and its scholars with these funding sources. Negotiate matching funds for proposals and overhead distribution between partners. Provide shared oversight for administration of internal grant and support programs.

The three Associate Deans and five Directors of the Graduate School constitute the cabinet of the Interim Dean of the Graduate School. This cabinet works to nurture, grow and promote graduate education, research and scholarship at UWM and to continuously improve the administrative functioning of the Graduate School.

Associate Dean for Natural Sciences, College of Letters & Science (L&S),
University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee (appointed by the Dean of L&S, Richard Meadows, as Interim Associate Dean, from March-June 2006, and as Associate Dean for two terms, from July 2006 to June 2008 upon college-level search).

Directly responsible to the Dean of L&S for administrative activities in support of the academic and research mission of the natural sciences departments, inter-department academic programs, certificate programs, centers and facilities. Worked directly with administrators, faculty and staff in following core areas: Faculty and staff personnel actions, schedule of classes, space and facilities, academic programs initiatives and reviews, and research support. Heard student grievances from the natural science units at the college level. (Senate Subcommittee on Evaluation of Administrators: Mean overall score 4.7 of 5 maximum)

Director of Laboratory for Surface Studies (LSS), Graduate School, University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee (elected by the LSS faculty, appointed by the Interim Dean of Graduate School, Dale Jaffe, for a three year term from August 2003 to May 2006)

Responsible for administration, governance, research, budget, official communications, and publicity, and professional development activities of interdisciplinary Wisconsin System Center of Excellence with faculty from College of Letters & Sciences (Departments of Chemistry and Physics) and College of Engineering and Applied Science (Departments of Materials Science and Mechanical Engineering). Reported to the Dean of Graduate School and acted as spokesperson for the Laboratory in interactions with UWM and UW-System administrators, and at local, state, national and international forums. Promoted collaborative and independent sponsored research.

Department Chair, Physics, College of Letters & Science, University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee (elected by the Physics faculty, appointed by the Interim Dean of L&S, Richard Meadows, for a one year term 2001/02)

Oversight of all academic, research and administrative departmental functions.

Assistant Chair, Department of Physics, University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee (appointed by the Physics Chair, Dilano Saldin, for a one year term 2000/01; replaced Saldin as department chair while he was on sabbatical in 2001/02).

Responsible for teaching schedule, appointments of all instructors, and all student grievances at department level.
