Current Research Areas

Broadly, the Child Stress and Coping Lab (CSCL) conducts research addressing issues related to the coping and adaptation of children and families experiencing extreme stress, such as pediatric chronic illness and treatment. The majority of our data is collected via qualitative interviewing or online survey.  While all of the projects in our lab are collaborative efforts, advanced graduate students lead projects focusing on concerns within different pediatric populations. Within each research focus area, we aim to incorporate cultural perspectives, as well as team science approaches to research projects. More information about current research projects within each area can be found in the graduate student bios.

The Child Stress and Coping Lab has multiple ongoing collaborative research projects with many external collaborators:

  1. Milwaukee Collaborative for Resilience and Emotional Wellness Science (CREWS) is a collaboration between Critical Care Pediatrics, Complex Care/Special Needs, Hematology/Oncology, Pediatric Psychology, Nursing, and Social Work. Researchers represent UWM, Medical College of Wisconsin, Marquette, Rosalind Franklin. Current research areas involving CSCL students include parent and family functioning in the context of PICU admissions, parent and family functioning among children with medical complexity (Complex Care), interpreted medical encounters/medical interpreters, experiences of siblings of pediatric patients, and palliative care. You can read more information on the CREWS website here.
  2. Jane B. Pettit Pain & Headache Center (Medical College of Wisconsin and Children’s Wisconsin): Current research topics with the Children’s Wisconsin Pain Clinic include experiences of pain dismissal and the intersection of chronic pain and obesity.
  3. Minnesota Epilepsy: Collaboration with Eva Igler, PhD on social/peer responses to epilepsy and non-epilepsy events
  4. Community Data Collection: Investigation of parental adjustment to adolescent traumatic experiences.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Our lab has been engaging with many resources during discussions related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in our research. Below, please find a partial list of the recent resources we have used. Please contact us if you’d like more information about our lab discussions and resources.
