My research program has focused on second-language acquisition, the process by which a language is learned by adults. Conventional wisdom in this field holds that adult language learners internalize their own version of the target language. Through my research I have attempted to understand the syntactic and phonological properties of these learner systems by relating them to universal principles that have been formulated for languages that have been learned by children.
