Early Travelers, Archaeologists and Antiquarians

2021 Update: New sources have been added to the bibliography ad hoc, but a more proper update is ‘on the list’!

This section includes references to early travelers, antiquarians, and ‘archaeologists’ who passed through Cyprus. In many cases, these are the names associated with the formation of the first collections of Cypriot material in foreign museums and private collections. Many of the articles focus on the circumstances surrounding the collection of antiquities (again, my emphasis here is on sculpture, however scholars researching other media and art forms will find the references useful) and in some cases there are references to contemporary publications of the discoveries (e.g., Cesnola at Athienou or Lang at Idalion). In that sense, these sources can be viewed more as historiographical tools.
