ED PSY 724: Advice to students from former students

These comments were submitted anonymously by 724 students on the course evaluation forms several years ago. They have not been edited in any way (except for spelling).

  • Take extensive notes during class. Don’t wait until the night before to do the homework — you won’t be able to get help.
  • Prepare a list of questions you have before each class. Do more problems in the book than the ones assigned.
  • Do not expect a “plug & chug” course like 624. Now that you know the basics from 624, it’s time to take that knowledge to the next level and learn harder topics but improve your interpretive skills as well. This class includes a lot of interpretation but the instructions from Prof. Azen are clear enough that doing the interpretation gets easier over the course of the class. I took this class expecting “plug & chug” and found doing the homework in the first half more difficult until I got into the mode of interpreting the data and relating it back to real life.
  • Always attend lecture. Read the book only for clarification. Always do homework. Ask and ask again if you’re confused.
  • Complete the homework conscientiously as it will aid in the learning of this material.
  • Students should review their homework with her one-on-one if there are markings from her. Study groups with classmates helpful — some students know a certain area better, different perspective.
  • Students should be warned that this course moves quickly & covers a lot of material; should be warned that this course will take a lot of time for hw & exams. Students should be strongly advised against taking more than one other course simultaneously. Excellent course well worth the time. Spent about 20 hours on hw/study per week between lecture & lab.
  • Try to find one or two people that you can review homework and/or lecture with. It really helps reduce anxiety! Read the text. Don’t put things off (HW) until the last minute to complete, as you may have questions about it.
  • Take 626 before taking 724. Read many other research papers to understand process. Do homework while the concepts are fresh in your mind. Plan on putting approx. 8 hours per week outside of class!
  • It is very helpful to read the textbook ahead and get some idea of the next class.
  • Develop a study group you work well with and meet throughout. Without this support, I might be dealing with issues of anxiety. Plus, you’re forced to really understand material when you have to help others understand it. Dr. Azen is extremely knowledgeable, willing to help, sincere in wanting her students to succeed and has high expectations. I appreciated her opinions on ethics of research and how we must abide by them.
  • Talk w/ Dr. Azen upfront if homework, studying, reviewing concepts works better in a different way for your learning style esp. if you work full time & need to fit school around that.
  • Do your homework “days” in advance. Do your reading well in advance so you can follow what is being taught/said in class.
  • Please read 624 well.
  • Need to be sure you have had appropriate pre-reqs. May want to take class alone or only 1 other class if student is not familiar with stats.
  • If you don’t understand something, get help right away. Don’t wait. Feel free to ask questions in class — if you’re confused, probably someone else has similar questions!
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Dr. Azen is very helpful if you have a question or are struggling to understand something. Be sure to allow adequate study time for the midterm. Familiarize yourself w/ the computer programs from the start — it will really help down the line!
  • Practice by solving as many problems as they can, ask the instructor for any unclear parts, attend regularly.
  • She is a great teacher. The statistics is not as hard as I thought before. If you study harder, you can make it.
  • 1. Don’t skip class. 2. Before even coming into this class at the beginning of the semester, review your old stats notes so you don’t get confused or hold things up for others… very important!!
  • Discuss the concepts/homework problems/computer work with your classmates outside of class, i.e. a study group is helpful.
  • Never get behind in the reading or the HW. Always come to class and be there on time.
  • Students need to really understand basic statistics and interpretation to follow better in this course.
  • Remember to stay relaxed and take your time — be ready for a few long days of stats!
  • Lots of work
  • Read the book, really try to learn from the assignments, and think critically. Also, don’t be scared — it really is not horrible!
  • Keep up with homework — allow for ample time to do assignments. Write more than you think you need to in order to explain fully!
  • I would suggest keeping up with the homework assignments and looking over the homework assignments for the test.
  • Do the homework sincerely. Do NOT keep doubts for later.
  • Do the homework throughout the time allotted and ask for help if needed.
  • Plan carefully — homework takes a long time. Some weeks 10-20 hours. Find a study group that has time that fits into your schedule.
  • Never miss Razia’s lecture! She has explanations you would not want to miss. If you do not understand material, schedule appointment with Razia.
  • Read and re-read the handouts from each class. They are helpful in understanding each chapter and homework assignments.
  • don’t take the course w/ this instructor.
  • Make sure they give at least one week for any assignment. Plus, they should try as much as possible to attend all class.
  • Homework is really important. Take as much note as possible.
